Artistic merit VS voting (a message from Leigh's under-caffeinated brain)

I’m just going to come out and say it: I’m tired of competitions that should be (and even claim to be) about artistic merit (or really just merit in general) being voting contests. I’m tired of seeing them, I’m tired of feeling harassed by them on social media, and I’m tired of it nearly always being the entry with the most friends/family/fan base/access to a bunch of coercible people that wins, whether or not it is the entry that actually merits doing so. I’m tired of the “expert judges” defaulting to the whims of the voters for the sole purpose of “community engagement”. Mostly I’m tired of artists (or whoever, this isn’t necessarily about “artistic” contests) having to put way more effort into the “please please please pretty please vote for ME!” meaning they have less time to work on the actual art/whatever project.

I feel like maybe this will turn into a larger blog post, possibly here since none of my blogs are really about anything. Or maybe it won’t now that this little vent is out there. What do you think? Does artistic merit even matter anymore? In the age of the internet meme, does recognition of art even matter any more? Is popular vote a good way to measure something like artistic merit? Is the ability to get lots of people to vote for you an art form in itself? Is it actually a terrible idea for me to be posting this pre-coffee? Am I asking some questions that are probably beyond the scope of my limited experience? Tune in next time (maybe) to find out!

Edit: I’m not saying the winners of these contests never have artistic merit, or that they don’t deserve to win. I’m saying, in general, their merit is secondary to their ability to get people to vote for them.
